There are billions billions of stars in this MILKY WAY, I am here inside a system called SOLAR SYSTEM. Out of many planets in the system here I am on EARTH. And do you know how many species of life there in on the planet earth? I would say billions of billions life forms… And here I am HUMAN. There are more than 6 billions people, Here I am. And do you know how many sperm do I have to fight to arrive first, to create me? millions of them.

And here I am. What a small chance that I exist? What about the chance of me and you meet each other? Then here you are, reading this message. OK. You are also a small chance to … so Love your self. I love my self too!!! Understand?

I was invited by my friends to join a group of tourists to visit Stueng Mean Chey, Phnom Penh city’s dump site. It was one of list item on the place to visit, so I joined them. The purpose of this visit is to deliver food, and basic medical care to people who live on the dump site. This is a routine trip for the organizer to the place. I’ve been told that the dump site has been closed, some how these people still live there.

I already have in mind the image of the place. But the vision I had in mind differ to what I really see. The condition they live in makes me ask this question, how could some one possibly live without constant threats of sickness? Even a very small cut could end up in infection.

When we first arrive there, it seem like the kids expect the truck. They emerge from the mountain of trash from every direction to queue behind the truck. It is a routine for them as this the group organize the trip frequently. Also, this is not the only group to deliver food to them. The queue is not long, but I cannot see that we’re not running out of kids, as they keep coming. The only things that are running out are bread loafs and fruit.

On front of the truck they were setting up a small table, under the umbrella. This is to provide basic medical care. This side, although not as long as the food sharing queue, the kids are suffering from sickness from small wound infection, fever to other serious illness. I was running around with my camera. There was a voice called me: Hey man are you available? I replied: Yes, and I am Khmer. He asked me to help. Although I am no medical professional, but cleaning wound with ready mixed solution is ok for me. So I end up helping cleaning wound and seal them with band-aid, for several kids. One thing I notice though, these wound are very small, but with poor sanitation they are all infected and swollen. If this would happen to me, it would have cured it self in a few days. But for them, even a very small cut could end up in serious infection.

An article in this morning business section of Phnom Penh Post catches my eyes, Beeline, a new mobile operator, is warned by the Ministry of Post and Telecommunication for charging it’s customers too low. It is not clear whether the service that Beeline charges too low is the VOIP or local calls.

It’s weird, as the cheaper the service is better off for consumer (us). But this time, thing is not that simple. Beeline is accused of practice unfair competition activities in free market, buy selling its service cheaper than cost. The warning from MPTC is due to a complaint made by Mobitel, the biggest market share holder of mobile telecomm in Cambodia. Also, Mobitel warns that it will restrict access of Beeline to its infrastructure.

Although it is an unfair competition act, but I don’t think it is necessary for the MPTC step in. Because in a free market environment, it will regulate it self. In simple term, Beeline cannot afford to lose forever, if it is true that it is selling services cheaper than cost. Unless otherwise Beeline is more efficient than the others.

I’ve been writing alot about internet cost in Cambodia. Unlimited internet in Cambodia is not cheap by my standard. But here is another affordable one from Metfone.

If you’re lucky enough to live where there is Mefone’s DSL cable nearby. You can get unlimited internet at your home for $35 at a very reasonable speed. The promised speed is 128kbps which is not high, but I did a test on my friend’s computer it is acceptable, except when you download.

If using download manager you can get speed up 20KBPS easily, but the problem is when you download everyone else in the network slow.

This morning I receive a message on my mobile says:

We together respect traffic law, we protect our lives, and promote national prestige. Message from General Commissariat of National Police

SMS is an effective way to mobilize people. There are occasions that SMS is banned in Cambodia. During the election day SMS were banned because it is possible for opportunist to use SMS to mobilize people to create social unrest.

But I doubt that this is not effective in solving traffic problem in Cambodia. Message must be in English, only small percentage people speak English in Cambodia. One more reason, is the breaking the rule now embodied in our DNA, I don’t think this simple SMS work. It is nice to try any way, let’s us see how it work?

I am back from a week-long vacation in Vietnam. Although the trip is not what I expected, but it is an experience worth sharing. Departure is a smooth and uneventful, but in my return journey I witnessed sad story about Cambodia Tourism. I will list the story below:

VISA: Most foreign national can apply for a Cambodia visa at Bavet-Mocbai check point. The official visa cost is $20, but if you’re travelling with bus company that take you all the way from Saigon to Phnom Penh, the bus company can help you get the visa for $4 (20+4=$24). $4 is a reasonable service fee for getting a visa, plus you can get a smooth procedure. Visitor can apply for an e-visa to avoid the waiting at the check point, however there are some check point that cannot accept electronic visa. Please see here for more information.

Arriving in Phnom Penh some bus company do not stop at tourist area, so you have to take tuk tuk to find hotel in tourist area. This part can be tricky and full of frustration, because the tuk tuk driver will try to rip you off if they can. I witnessed a tuk tuk driver charged 3 Vietnamese men (Sadly these Vietnamese men are muted and hearing disability) $10 for a ride to a hotel that cost them $40 per night. $10 for a tuk tuk ride is beyond reasonable for a tuk tuk ride in Phnom Penh.

Tourism industry workers are showing the world the ugly face of Cambodian, and it is sad. No wonder our tourism industry perform poorly compare too neighbor countries. I share this because I hope that travelers who read this can avoid being ripped off.
