Sport and nationalism has strong link between each other, successfulness in sport bring proud to the nation. In Cambodia the link did not stop between sport and nationalism, but also there is a link to gambling. In a recent match between Cambodian U17 team versus Brunei team, there are accusations that Cambodia team has been bribed to set the result at 2-0 only. So, for those who bet on Cambodian side, will lose their money.
Some believe that Cambodian beat Brunei 2-0 will not make the nation lose its proud, but the fact is the performance of the team is very poor in the second half, although they dominant the field but they have no intention to score another goal. This lead to the accusation that Cambodian U17 team has been bought. So the question is nationalism sentiment has been bought?
Sport is not supposed to put in gambling, but why sport fan put their money in this kind of game. Every sport fan claimed that they love their country, they are proud of their national team. But putting this kind of nationalism in to gambling is not right ethically, although the law allow football betting in Cambodia. Football fan bet in the match between Cambodia Vs Brunei with the intension to gain more money. The question is will you put your nation to bet in gambling? Have some football fan been bought?
The question of who is to blame is yet to answers. The football fans point their fingers to the national team management, while the management say they don’t know. My opinion is we are all to be blame. The government allows football betting (2 companies has license in this business), the football fan has blurred the line between sports and gambling. All of these are not suppose to happen in the first place.
