7.30 PM a family were having dinner under the candle light, not because they want to be romantic, but there’s no electricity. Worse, it is not some where in the country side, it is in the heart of Phnom Penh, Olympic Commune.

Electricity black out happen everyday in Phnom Penh, surprisingly not every one feel frustrated about it, or they don’t express their feeling about this problem. The frequency of the black out differ from place to place. Some happen twice a day, while some commune it rarely happen.

Here’s my question: how often does it happen in your neighborhood? How do you feel about it? How affected you are with electricity went out?

Not sure if you wanted to hear from the US, but I live near Atlanta, Georgia. My power only goes out when we have very strong storms or if someone crashes their car into a utility pole. Usually we get the power back in no more than a few hours. However, I hear that they have blackouts sometimes in California when it is VERY hot in the summer and everyone is using too much energy like for air conditioners.
I found your website recently and I really enjoy reading it and looking at your beautiful pictures. I’ve read several books recently about Cambodia, mostly took place during the 1975-1979 Khmer Rouge era. How very sad! I can’t believe something like that took place in my life time. I had never been taught in school much about it. Found your site while I was trying to do some more research. I hope it continues to improve there, maybe someday I will be able to vacation there, it looks so beautiful. Best of luck!

My understanding is that electricity supplies into all residents in Phnom Penh derived from 2 diesel generated plants [Chbar Ampouv and Chroy Chanvar areas near old stadium] and Kirirom. These 3 plants alone cannot meet the demands of electricty which on the increase every day as the population grows and the business sectors.

Business sectors are actually opting to government supplied electricity rather than using their own generator due to the price of fuel [diesel], which is and will come off the expenses of ordinary people [domestic to use less and the business sectors to use more].
