I am back from a week-long vacation in Vietnam. Although the trip is not what I expected, but it is an experience worth sharing. Departure is a smooth and uneventful, but in my return journey I witnessed sad story about Cambodia Tourism. I will list the story below:

  • VISA: Most foreign national can apply for a Cambodia visa at Bavet-Mocbai check point. The official visa cost is $20, but if you’re travelling with bus company that take you all the way from Saigon to Phnom Penh, the bus company can help you get the visa for $4 (20+4=$24). $4 is a reasonable service fee for getting a visa, plus you can get a smooth procedure. Visitor can apply for an e-visa to avoid the waiting at the check point, however there are some check point that cannot accept electronic visa. Please see here for more information.
  • Arriving in Phnom Penh some bus company do not stop at tourist area, so you have to take tuk tuk to find hotel in tourist area. This part can be tricky and full of frustration, because the tuk tuk driver will try to rip you off if they can. I witnessed a tuk tuk driver charged 3 Vietnamese men (Sadly these Vietnamese men are muted and hearing disability) $10 for a ride to a hotel that cost them $40 per night. $10 for a tuk tuk ride is beyond reasonable for a tuk tuk ride in Phnom Penh.

Tourism industry workers are showing the world the ugly face of Cambodian, and it is sad. No wonder our tourism industry perform poorly compare too neighbor countries. I share this because I hope that travelers who read this can avoid being ripped off.

Well, you find these problems in Cambodia, but you find them many other places, too.
